The Color Of Confidence

by

I’ve never worn red lipstick. Maybe it’s an age thing -I’m 23, and red lipstick has always felt a bit too old, a bit too sophisticated for my life- or it could be that I have fairly full lips, and red or dark lipstick is always hard to pull off with really big lips.

But from the looks of the Fall RTW runways, I may have to give it another shot.

Gucci Fall 2007 RTW

That 40’s esque red lip-neutral eye-strong brow combo always makes an appearance one way or another, and this season was no exception. The purist, here, was Luigi Murenu at Gucci, who went for a very classic, and very very glamorous, red lip and curled hair.

Proenza Schouler Fall 2007 RTW

At Proenza Schouler the emphasis was more on the brow, done in a an almost severe “Warholian” (makeup artist Gucci Westman’s word) style, and very red and very glossy lips. Hair did not conform to the pin-curled 40’s stereotype, but went straight and half-messy.

Valentino Fall 2007 RTW

Valentino can always be counted on for classy-in-a-different way looks. Here he did slightly sharper pin curls than we saw at Gucci, but with a similiarly dark red lip and yellow-gold on the eyes. The effect was a little bit harsher, a little bit tougher, take on the classic 40’s face.

Any tips from readers about how to pull off this glamorous, but decidedly tricky, look?

I love red lipstick. It’s been my signature look for years. Here are a couple posts from my site on red lipstick:

I think it’s interesting that you say you have never tried the dark lips because of an age thing. I am 25 and I love to do dark lips - maroon and red are both very fun. I am blonde and very fair so I generally wear pretty bold lip colors all winter so that I don’t look so pastey. My suggestion would be to use colors that coordinate with your clothing. I have a maroon sweater that I love and I have a lipstick that matches it almost perfectly. Generally when I wear the bold lips I have very minimal eyes.

PS- I just found your site today I look forward to future posts.
