Have a Very Heatherette Day (and Prom)

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Traver Rains (right) and Richie Rich (left), the New York City design duo known as Heatherette, who are famous for their elaborately staged and performed runway shows likeheatherette.jpg Fall 2007’s Wizard of Oz inspiration, did not show a collection at the Fall 2008 Fashion Week.

Gossip and fashion snoops ran rampant with theories of Richie and Traver’s breakup, of Heatherette’s demise. But au contraire: Heatherette is alive and kicking … and expanding!

Aside from Richie working on an album (featuring Fergie), the Heatherette boys have been busy designing their own line of makeup with (who else?) MAC. And inspirations are just as crazy-fun with ideas coming from bubble tape and glitter. Plus, the boys say that their new makeup is perfect for the upcoming prom season.

Yes, it’s true: Heatherette has prom on the brain.

Read an exclusive Heatherette interview with ELLEgirl magazine online now!
heatherette_mac.jpgFind out what Traver and Richie wore to their prom (teaser: one went with an era theme; one wore a kilt), get suggestions about how to make yor look your own, and check out pictures (including the one here) from an awesome styling shoot with model-heiress Lydia Hearst.

And stay tuned to Style Fix, because after dishing on what I wore to my proms I hunted down photos of all three …

A Promenade Back in Time: Heatherette Would Approve of What I Wore to My Proms

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

It’s May which means that tomorrow is my birthday! But, aside from that, most high schoolers are getting ready for prom.prom-girls.jpg

All the prom buzz has me looking back on what I wore, and whether or not I was a delusional school girl with my dress choices.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

I was asked by a senior, and decided to make my own dress. Back then, I was not the sewing machine that I am today. This took a lot of help, but in the end I felt that it was worth it because I had an original … wait! Over there … that senior girl totally has the same dress as me!

I (and crew) used a deep blue, sequined (enter the sewing nightmare: sequin glue loves to ruin needles) fabric to make a halter-style, long and lean cut gown. And Tara, who did not make her dress, and was not pleased to see a little sophomore at her senior prom in the same dress, matched me identically!

JUNIOR YEAR

I went to prom at another school besides mine. Sneaky, smart Drew asked me light years
before. I was working at 5*7*9 at the time and snagged a clearance rack, satiny, pale mint green, empire waist number with bead and sequin work on the bust.

What I loved (and still do) about this prom look was how I accessorized: I got my makeup done at a Clinique counter, and had fabulous shimmery mint eyes. My hair was done up, in massive, soft curls with one of those boingy metal butterfly clips (with mint green jewels on his wings).
prom-date.jpg
SENIOR YEAR

I didn’t go to my prom, or even the same school from my junior year. I went to a third school’s dance, with a guy that I hit on when he ate at the pizza place where I was hostessing.

I wore a white streamed-line dress that was also a 5*7*9 clearance rack find, and also had sequin and bead work on the bust.

Mom and I decided that the spaghetti straps were not flattering - so we took them off and made it strapless. Then, we saw my bare chest, back, and shoulders as a canvas. Intentions for Mom to paint a design on my back were foiled (see the irony, Mom? That was your idea and now I have a tattoo there) when the hair school that I went to for an up-do took hours and hours to style my hair.

Here’s the kicker to this get-up: I used eyelash glue to attach fake diamonds to my chest, continuing and extending the sequin/bead pattern from the dress.

I spurt out all of this, because the Heatherette boys recently interviewed with ELLEgirl magazine about prom. Aside from the gorgeous pictures with them styling model/heiress Lydia Hearst, they mention several ways to make your look your own … hence, I got thinking about how I did this.

Heatherette interview clips and photos up next, including what they wore to prom. … and possibly photos of all three of my prom looks. Do I dare?

VIPs Weigh in on Miley Cyrus’s Vanity Fair Shoot

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Miley saga continues.

Post-controversy measures are flying fast around anyone and everyone involved in Miley Cyrus photo scandal du jour.
miley_cyrus.jpg
Photographer Annie Leibovitz is, obviously, still defending her shoot of the young teen sensation for Vanity Fair, saying repeatedly that the photo was meant to show Miley’s innocence.

Miley herself first reported thinking the shoot was fun and cute, saying that it was “really artsy. It wasn’t in a skanky way. And you can’t say no to Annie.” Later, however, formal statements - purportedly her thoughts - were released, all with a perfectly scripted tone about how “embarrassed” she is.

Vanity Fair just keeps repeating that her parents were there, and that she and they saw and loved all the digital prints.

Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus claim they left right before the most controversial picture was styled and taken.

Disney - essentially her Hannah Montana boss - says they won’t be taking action, but decision like these obviously effect her fame with her current fans. Gary Marsh, the president of entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide said, “For Miley Cyrus to be a ‘good girl’ is now a business decision for her. Parents have invested in her godliness. If she violates that trust, she won’t get it back.”

The latest point of view to be tossed into the mix of scripted opinions, is the stylist himself, Michael Roberts. His statement led to a three page article in Women’s Wear Daily yesterday. Essentially, he said … Americans are crazy; he’s European and over there this would portray innocence. It was not a bed sheet, it was a dress. It’s all a joke, but not funny because he is offended.

And, of course, I am sure that you have all been on the edge of your seat, waiting for what I believe to be the best thoughts on the matter yet. My mother’s (summarized, because that would just be weird if I tape recorded our convos):

1. Why is nobody mentioning the creepiness of the daddy-daughter pose?

2. That was by no means an innocent shot.

3. She looks sweaty, makeup-less, and … well … post-sex.

4. Hopefully, she gets through this okay, and can move on with her life.

For more on this … oh, nevermind. There is no way that you want to hear more about this, is there? Turn on your TV, open the newspaper, or just Google “Miley Cyrus” and you’ll be flooded.

The snapshot of the daddy-daughter duo shown here is from backstage, before the 2008 CMT Music Awards.

Disney Starlet Miley Cyrus Snaps Yet Another Provocative Photo

Monday, April 28th, 2008

Miley Cyrus - the 15-year-old ubiquitous daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus - has been making headlines and topping Internet searches for a reason new to the Disney channel starlet: She’s been getting naked. A lot.
miley_and_billy_ray_cyrus.jpg
First, there were the self-portraits taken with a female friend, one step away from making out with each other.

Then, she took it one step further, snapping pics of her tugging at her tank top to show off her underwear. And more of her laying atop a boy’s lap, with her shirt pulled up to show off her belly. Although the Internet world spread these quickly alongside questions of validity, Miley (a.k.a. Hannah Montana) has since apologized thus accepting their legitimacy.

But now, she has more help than just a digital camera, mirror, BFF … now, Vanity Fair magazine and photographer Annie Leibovitz are helping the young teen to show her goodies.

The June issue may have Bobby Kennedy on the cover, but inside the pages lies a topless Miley, draped in only a satin sheet. There are a few of Miley in clothes, but she is creepily, sexy looking as she drapes herself over her father.

This latest stunt is already flashing itself in the NY Times business section, parenting and gossip blogs worldwide, CNN celebrity news, Entertainment Tonight, radio shows nationwide … but not (anymore) on Vanity Fair’s Web site. You can find the photo of her with her dad miley-magazine.jpg(shown here), and a brief write up, but all the links to reading or seeing more now lead to pages that are not available.

Photos from the current controversy (shown second) aren’t even flattering. She looks ragged, tired, and gothic. In fact, she looks more like the dead girl from The Ring movies than herself.

So, will be seeing all of Miley come June? Or has the Disney legal team worked some kind of backwards magic to have the story changed?

For more, I recommend checking out Bitten and Bound where blogger Meg has provided links to all of the photos, quotes from several sources, and pics from German Vanity Fair’s inclusion of Hannah/Miley.

Allure Got Angie Harmon in the Nude

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Allure magazine will feature Angie Harmon, along with here-and-there actress Gabrielle Union, singer Jill Scott, Dirty Sexy Money’s Zoe McLellan, and Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, in the upcoming May 2008 issue.

All of these women have revealed the beauty of a woman’s body by removing their clothes for the camera. Their hope is to boost the everyday woman’s image of what is beautiful through this tasteful, artistic nude scene. They want Allure readers to see that beauty is diverse.angie-harmon-allure.jpg

“It’s about showing the female body in a positive, beautiful way,” Angie says in Allure.

The women range from verging on too skinny to a curvy size 16 (that is, Jill is a 16 and the rest are skinny). The four are 33 to 37 in age. The four are not overly diverse.

Young and old women are beautiful, too. Have you seen 42-year-old Stacey Dash on magazine covers lately? She’s gorgeous!

I’m not convinced that this will actually achieve giving girls confidence. Most of us aren’t a size 1 or 16; most of us fall somewhere in between.

Hey, Allure: get a real woman naked and then I’ll be impressed.
Let’s see the Latino women with a Jennifer Lopez-sized booty. Show me a post-pregnancy body as beautiful. Get Jennifer Love Hewitt to prove that white women are sexy when curvy, too.

Give me healthy celebrity bodies - not under- or overweight ones. That would impress me.

The photo shown here is NOT the upcoming May 2008 issue; it is from 2001, when Angie previously was a cover girl.

Hollywood Has Green Fever: What Celebs Do Out of the Spotlight

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Believe it or not, not every celebrity turns to reality TV shows when they have a lag in their work schedule. Surprisingly, there are some who even find activities, hobbies, and jobs completely outside of the realm of Hollywood and into the world of doing good. Check out what these busy bees are up to …
she-and-him-album.jpg
* Cindy Crawford just started writing a blog for Vanity Fair. The topic? Environmentalism.

* Chloe Sevigny takes the New York City subway to get around town.

* Rachel McAdams hosts the enviro-friendly site Green Is Sexy with two of her friends.

* Zooey Deschanel teamed up with singer-songwriter M. Ward to create the band She & Him. Together, they released an album - Volume 1 - and are promoting a Barneys tee shirt recycling project.

* Kristen Bell raises money for children with autism.

* Ellen DeGeneres is producing her own pet food. She bought part of the all-natural company Halo, and is now a co-owner.

* Elizabeth Hurley bought an organic farm! She is loving life as a farmer so much that she has retired from show business.

ADAM Introduces Jackson Pollock to Spring Fashion

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

adam-dress.jpgI am beyond in love with the clothes for spring that have come with direct inspiration from major names in art history. First, I found impressionistic flowers in Stella McCartney’s collection. Now, thanks to the cover of the May Cosmopolitan, which features my fave Kristen Bell in an amazing dress, I discovered another painting-inspired spring collection.

ADAM, a design house by Adam Lippes, has a page dedicated to “Fashion as Art” with fabrics including hand-painted, Jackson Pollock-inspired, geometric shapes, dip-dyed, and more!

I am in love … but perhaps someone could make artist-like clothes that I can afford? Because ADAM’s $150 to $600 price range is not cutting it for my budget.

Posh Quote Heard ‘Round the Internet

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham is on the cover of - and was interviewed for - the new issue of British Vogue.

Here’s the top quote from the magazine’s insides:

“Obviously, working out is important. Well, I don’t. I have joined a gym, but I can’t bring myself to start. What do you wear on the running machine? I can’t bring myself to wear flat shoes.”

Does she not learn dance routines for Spice Girls’ tours? Or does she not consider dancing working out?

“Sex and the City” Photo Shoot with Annie Leibovitz for Vogue

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Famed photographer Anne Leibovitz has been running around New York City with Sarah Jessica “Carrie” Parker and Chris “Big” Noth for a Vogue magazine shoot of the Sex and the City characters that will soon be seen on the big screen.

They were on 5th Avenue. Then they headed to a row boat, out on the water. Most people are having fun talking about SJP fell during this shoot, but here are some new, more flattering pics of the city set:

Runway Finale: Fan Favorite Christian Takes the Win

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

It is with bittersweet tenacity that I watched the season finale of Project Runway this last hour. Of course this is the moment that I have been waiting for all season - to find out who would win and to see the top three fabulous catwalk collections - but as it comes to an end I am reminded that this is the last Wednesday evening where I can enjoy new episodes of both America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway.

But enough stalling (and whining) already.
christian.png

CHRISTIAN WON!

Christian, with his mere 21 years, will receive a grand prize package that begins with an editorial feature in an issue of ELLE magazine. He will also walk away with a cash prize of $100,000 from TRESemmé professional hair care to start his own line, and will have the opportunity to sell a fashion line on Bluefly.com. Saturn gave him a 2008 three-door, Saturn Astra, too.

The biggest prize of all, however, was probably guest judge Victoria Beckham - who he all but declared his love for - saying that she was “such a huge fan” and would be honored to wear anything that he made anytime.

There was foreshadowing to Christian as the winner including: his being the headlining designer; his collection had voiceover and backstage footage during the episode, and the others had none; and photographs of his fashions were leaked onto the Internet before tonight’s airing. Even though, I never gave up hope that Rami had a chance … that is until Heidi said:

“The winner of Project Runway
season four is … CHRISTIAN!”

Surprise Celebrity Lines: You Too Can Look Like Amy Winehouse

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

More celebrities are coming out with their own lines of products: no surprise there. Today, everyone has a perfume or a clothing line, or two or both.
amy_winehouse.JPG
Usually the celebrities make sense, however. Sarah Jessica Parker has a classic sense of style and starred in a hit, fashionable show … and has her own clothing line. Amanda Bynes is cute, sweet, and has a throng of teen girl fans … and has her own clothing line.

But now it is just getting ridiculous. Here’s three recent announcements:
jill_scott.jpg
1. Amy Winehouse: forget the drug and rehab scandals and what do you have? Bad makeup and horrid hair … and her own line of beauty accessories. That’s right ladies and gents, you too can now have a matted rat’s nest atop your head (product: hairspray) and eye makeup that looks like you used an extra thick magic marker (product: liquid liner). But don’t forget the clothing accessories, too (product: animal-print head scarf).

2. Jill Scott:
she’s got a big voice, a big heart for children and her hometown of Philadelphia, and big boobs. I said it. Jill Scott has some tatas on her, but now she’ll have better support. The soulful singer has teamed with company Ashley Stewart to design the
Butterfly Collection by Jill Scott, a lingerie line for plus-size girls and their “girls.”
luke_wilson.jpg
3. Luke Wilson:
he loves golf; girls love him. Next rational career step? Of course! Design a clothing line for golf-playing men! The actor and “Top 40 Hollywood Golfer” (according to Golf Digest) has teamed with athletic clothing-giant Puma and Swedish athlete Johan Edfors (shown here with Luke) to create clothes inspired by the “more sophisticated” style of 1950’s sportswear.

Any guesses for whose next? A collection of shirts by the ever-shirtless Matthew McConaughey? Bronzer by the ridiculously fake tan Lindsay Lohan? Perfume called “Sanity” by Paula Abdul?

Hunger Pains Drive My Goals for 2008

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

It is a basic reality that you need some money in life to pay for things like rent, food, and student loans. Currently, my job (plus my two side jobs) is not covering these life necessities. I’ve never been one to set New Year’s resolutions; however, hunger pains, this week’s Project Blog challenge, writer.jpg and the horoscope that I just read for fun - “All the wishing and wanting is about to pay off.” – have inspired me to set a goal for the upcoming year.

I hope that you can tell that I am actually a writer - as in that’s my daytime job, and that’s what I went to school to study. I love to write (hence two blogs) and always have. Thus, a lot of my goals come from childhood dreams that involve the written word and my being creative with it. Here are just a few:

1. Work at a magazine. Check. During college, I interned for six months, full time at Philadelphia Style Magazine

2. Be published. In today’s world, this has a much looser definition. Technically, I am published every time I write online. But, because of several experiences including the above, my work and my name have been in ink.

3. Write a novel that is successfully turned into a movie. So far away from this one, but it remains on my list because I know that I will be there one day.

4. Find a nice boy, fall in love, get married, have wonderful and beautiful babies (wait, that has nothing to do with writing. Hmm…) and write my own wedding vows.

If a novel is my main writing dream left to conquer, should I set the goal this year to dive in and start writing a page a night? Unfortunately, I know myself and know that this won’t work with my knitting-addicted, money-crown.jpglazy butt that has to work non-stop just to make ends (almost) meet. Instead, I want to take it one (smaller) step at a time: find a full-time job that recognizes and respects my talent. In this instance, though I’m rarely one to chase the dollar, I’m talking about paycheck recognition.

I want a company to show me the money!

By this time in 2008, I will be in a position where I am able to work my 40 hours. Then, come home and write rather than run off to another moneymaking opportunity. I will earn a raise or accept a new, better-paying job: that is my goal for 2008.
