Cavalli Leaves Me Wondering: How Can I Wear Any of These?
Back in February here on StyleFix (the days
before I was the writer), an article was written that recently caught another blogger’s eye and created a stir about fashion shows. Through this article, Heatherette: Like The Wizard of Oz Wasn’t Trippy Enough, former StyleFix writer Laura criticized fashion designers who lost the functional aspect of clothing design when going to extreme with the artistic aspect.
Whether I agree or disagree with what Laura or the impassioned commenter I can’t say, as it is neither one hundred percent either way nor is it the point of this rambling rant.
I bring up this article, to bring up the artistic nature of fashion shows. I have recently viewed Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2008 designs that graced the Milan runways of fashion week. If you also bore witness to these outfits, you probably already know which ones I am specifically intrigued by (or you know because there’s a picture of them right here).
Feathers are hot right now; designers are attempting to push them as the next big thing. As you can clearly see in these pictures here from Cavalli’s recent show in Milan, it’s not just one or two feathers either: it’s the whole dang bird!
So feathers are hot: check. Artistic expression and unique creativity make for one crazy, entertaining fashion runway show: check.
But usually I can look at a wildly-artsy piece, and see how it could be transformed into something wearable by the everyday gal. For Cavalli’s feather-frenzied fashions, I simply cannot conceive how this conversion would be made (any suggestions?).
Don’t misinterpret me, I don’t think high fashion designers need to focus on functionality at all - because the average miss doesn’t spend $1,000 on practical clothes. It’s the clothes that will make her feel special, elegant, and one-of-a-kind that will cause the wallet to loosen. But I am at a loss after viewing this collection, Mr. Cavalli. How am I supposed to wear these looks?
Anyone? Feather pants calling your name?

I’d like to know exactly how you would wash pants made from feathers. I know, in nature birds get wet all the time, but they also have natural oils that prevent the saturation of the feathers. If the bird is no longer attached, then there is no longer any oil. Have you ever seen a wet, nasty feather on the ground? Yea, I rest my case.
