Designers Plea: Avoid Knock-Off Wedding Gowns
There’s a new hot topic for counterfeiters: wedding dresses. Designers of $2,000+ gowns for her big day, including names such as Watters, Jim Hjelm, Lazaro, and Maggie Sottero, have posted warnings on their sites, urging consumers to be cautious when purchasing a dress with a designer label.
Designers suggest only buying from authorized dealers (a listing of a designer’s authorized dealers should be available on their Web site), and following the old adage that “if it seems to good be to true it probably is.”
Copying a designer’s creations is nothing new. Wedding dress imitation isn’t even a new thing: Kleinfeld, New York City’s wedding dress heaven, has been taking measures for a long time to prevent in-store idea stealing (read more about Kleinfeld’s no camera policy and anti-counterfeit measures at Counterfeit Chic). But it seems as if the people’s willingness to shop online and desire to find the best bargain have helped the Internet bring counterfeit wedding gowns to the masses.
