Golden Globes Red Carpet: Version Thank God Some People Can Dress Themselves

by

Some celebrities at the Golden Globes didn’t make me throw popcorn at the screen, believe it or not. Actually, all things considered, I said “Pretty!” a surprising amount of times. But I’m going to share just 4 with you, because any more would take too long, and get boring, and anyway there weren’t that many.

Drew Barrymore

My mom accused me of liking this just because it’s pink (she’s right) and because she’s tan, which reminds me of the Carribbean vacation I’ve just returned from and desperately want to return to (she’s a little bit right). But mostly, I just think it’s lovely. She looks very soft, and very happy, and the draping adds interest to an otherwise simple dress. The color is fabulous on her, and she doesn’t muck it up with too much jewelry or crazy hair or makeup. It’s just. . .pretty!

Helen Mirren

Lord, I love me some Helen Mirren. THIS is how you do sexy at 61, ladies. That color is heaven on her, and the jewelry picks it up just right. And her hair is soft and tasteful. And I’m tickled by the expression on her face in this picture. She’s like “DAMN I’m fine. And I can ACT. YOU GOT NOTHIN, BEYONCE.”

Becki Newton

This is Becki Newton, aka the totally wonderfully fabulously bitchy Amanda on Ugly Betty. She’s by far my favorite character on that show, but that has nothing to do with why I love this look. It’s this dress. Specifically, it’s the color of this dress. It’s the exact shade of this cushion-cut emerald ring I saw once and obsessed about for a solid year in college, complete with getting-that-boy-I-didn’t-really-want-to-marry-to-propose-just-so-I-could-get-that-ring fantasies. And look at her skin, how pretty her skin is, it’s just glowing! And the gold jewelry, subtle, but rich, perfection. And the subtle hair and makeup, and my GOD I JUST WANT THIS DRESS.

Felicity Huffman

Maybe I’m on a jewel-tone kick right now. Because creamsicle is all well and good, but nothing flatters skin like a rich jewel-y blue or green. I have a problem with Felicity Huffman, usually, because ever since Transamerica she’s looked like a man to me. Actually, she always kind of looked like a man, like a stringy beef jerky man, but especially so since that movie. But not here! Here, she looks very much like a woman, a woman in an exceptionally beautiful dress. I love the little belt, and the full skirt with the narrow halter top, and the cunning little pocket, and the soft hair with the dark eyes. No mannish women here!
