New York Fashion Week Spring 2009: Time for a Change
When flipping through press photos of Fashion Weeks’ runways today I realized that I tend to look at the same designers almost everytime, checking to see if any have gone outside of their normal box. At first glance, I decided that: Mass numbers of 20-something girls will continue to buy BCBG. Dior will never fail to make vintage looks feel edgy. Chanel understands making a collection cohesive. Some designers Alexander McQueen - will never learn how to flatter a woman’s body.
So with New York Sping 2009 Fashion Week under way I am focing myself to reach outside of my box and check out some designers that I usually brush over.
Rock and Republic showed off a line of club wear that covered almost every stereotypical woman. There was an outfit for the sexy secretary, the skanky club girl, the respectable club girl, the boho chic mama, the businessman, and more. I like the diversity in design, but was disappointed in a spring line containing only black and white. Spring screams for color.
Elise Overland had a ot of great individual basics. She gave us crisply tailored dresses, stuctured mini jackets, relaxed pants, and girly touches. But then she chose her accessories. The headbands and sunglasses chosen dated the looks and took them from classic elegance to outdated trying-to-hard. I suppose, at least, the pretty colors of the sideliners added a pop of color to the otherwise black-and-white collection.
