Show Me Your La Perla!
Regardless of your designer devotion status, you have likely heard of Marc Jacobs.
He has extensive fashion training beginning with having attended the High School of Art and Design, and then Parsons School of Design in New York City. Early on, he was recognized with awards such as multiple Gold Thimbles, Design Student of the Year, and multiple Perry Ellis awards including the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s New Fashion Talent.
Today, Jacobs serves not only as the artistic director for Louis Vuitton, but also has his own labels: Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and a new line of watches.
He has also made news this year, first for ranking 8th in Out magazine’s “50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” and then for entering drug and alcohol rehab.
But inspite of early 2007 personal struggles, Marc Jacobs was in attendance - with a huge spring 2008 collection - at fashion week this year. He brought us some of the boldest, most-wearable, flirty-fun, spring dresses out of all the presenting designers. If I had a reason to wear an expensive dress, this purple shiny number - with just a hint of flowery print (Do you hear me, Balenciaga? Just a hint) - would be my choice.
But not everything Mr. Jacobs unveiled was met with the same applause. Take these awkward half-heels, for instance. I can’t decide if I like them or not. Different, yes. But wouldn’t I tumble over in them?
And then (enter creepy Jaws’ music) … the most talked about item to hit the runways as of late (the notes quicken) …
Shants. Sheer, see-through pants. Everyone is talking about them, and not just those put out by Marc, but Prada and many other top designs as well.
This is clearly an attempt at one of two things:
1. They are experimenting to see just how much control they have over the public. Dance, puppets, dance!, or
2. It’s another part of this whole, unfortunate ’80s revamp: legwarmers; huge graphics; tight, slim-fit jeans; side ponytails; … and be sure to check out the gi-normous bow atop the first model below.
Oh, Marc, I had such high hopes when I saw your dresses (and am still in love with them), but, really, mesh? Do you want to see my panties that bad?

This “special” number below is actually something that I would wear … from the waist up, that is. Purple seems to be his spring color this year.

And just in case you wanted more mesh in other places, here’s a belly-bearing, look-like-your-a-pregnant-skanky-librarian, ill-fitting … dress?

And since I can’t seem to put a link in the heading, check out La Perla here.
