You Will Never Believe How Many Types of Sleeves I’ve Found
Learning things can be fun, don’t you think? Or at least it’s fun to learn about things that already interest you - such as fashion! Such as sleeves!
Previously, I explained three styles of sleeves that are all the catwalk rage right now: bell, lantern, and balloon. How about we take a little look-see at a few that have probably been in our closets for years?
The raglan sleeve is what you probably picture when you think of a baseball tee. The sleeves’ seams continue all the way to the neckline, rather than joining at the shoulder as with other styles. In addition to the multi-colored sport-style shirts, sweaters and jackets also commonly feature a raglan sleeve. The length and fit of the rest can vary; for this cut it’s all about how it’s attached.
A bishop sleeve gains inspiration from its name’s sake. It is long, fuller at the bottom, and has a fitted cuff. Now wait, this sounds exactly like the balloon sleeve. The difference? Balloon bellow and puff a lot more; the bishop is more streamlined, as you can see on this burgundy Pink Tartan optic print wrap dress available at Saks for $495.
Many other styles, though less popular but still out there, were most prevalent in the 1800s and earlier. The virago, a fad of the 1620s and 1630s, is a full sleeve, that is gathered above the elbow with ribbon, a band, etc. to create a look of two puffed sections.
The poet sleeve is one that Shakespeare, as well as the 1980s may remember. It is the extreme version of the bell, running slim from shoulder to wrist, with a dramatic burst of flared ruffles at the cuff. I absolutely had a pink, silk, bodysuit with these sleeves in middle school. In fact, it may just be at my parents’ house, still in my closet if you want it.
I’m beginning to drown in a sea of upper extremity coverings, and yet, still, we’ve only just begun!
different kinds of sleeves, what is this sleeve called
